Ebony is one of the hardest and most difficult woods to work with.
The wood's high density and hardness place special demands on the comb maker's tools, and the extremely fine-pored surface is unforgiving. Accuracy to within a tenth of a millimeter is required to ensure the comb maintains its even shape and a completely smooth surface.
Ebony combs care for your hair while combing. Unlike metal or plastic combs, for example, which almost always have sharp edges, these combs are perfectly crafted. The ebony itself is able to transport the hair oil on its surface and transports this natural oil, so essential for hair health, to the often dry ends of your hair.
Another important advantage is that the natural material does not absorb electrical charges and thus prevents the hair from becoming statically charged when combing.
Careful polishing with natural beeswax brings out the material's silky sheen. Ebony has a higher density than water, making it waterproof even without polish. However, we recommend rubbing the comb down from time to time with a little vegetable oil, or better yet, with our special horn comb balm.
Genuine ebony combs are rare and valuable, but also extremely durable and timelessly beautiful. It's important that they are crafted horizontally from a single piece , as ebony doesn't tolerate tension within the comb, which can often arise from gluing different sections together. This (unfortunately) precludes the possibility of reusing any leftover pieces of the valuable wood. Genuine ebony combs are masterpieces of craftsmanship that prove to their owners every day for many years that it's worth seeking out the special, even in the smallest things.
