The 1000-Year-Old Brush

No, this isn't a brush that a wandering druid would have used to sweep his face (and they probably all wore beards), but a shaving brush with a handle made of ancient oak.

The wood of the handle comes from an old half-timbered house that is unfortunately no longer suitable for renovation—more precisely, from an old barn in the Westerwald region. It has been sufficiently seasoned and is therefore likely to be completely warp-resistant.

We sawed through some of the beams from the old house (which was very exciting, because you never know exactly what old nails, shrapnel, or metal anchors our ancestors had embedded in this wood) and discovered that the wood had an unusual and very beautiful pattern. After turning, this structure becomes clearly visible, and polishing with beeswax polish brings it out even more and gives the brush handle a silky shine.

Treatment with varnish is not necessary, as the wood is largely insensitive to moisture.
