The brush body consists of two to three tightly bonded horn plates. The upper part of this brush (the side without bristles) is made of light horn, while the lower part is made of light or dark horn. After lamination (the bonding of the horn plates), the brush body shapes are sawn out of these, sanded and polished in several steps, then fitted with bristles and polished again.

The thick horn body created by lamination is heavy, sits comfortably in the hand and is always unique, as no two horns are alike.

Horn brushes were widespread in earlier times (at least among the wealthy sections of the population) - but were then almost completely replaced by brushes made of wood and later also by those made of plastic.
The Petz Manufactory in Vienna has made it its mission to revive this ancient craft.
