In the past, about 100 years ago, deer antler horn was one of the most commonly used materials for making shaving brush handles. Deer antler is ideal for wet shaving because it is very elastic, yet extremely impact- and break-resistant.
In addition, it is available every year without endangering the animals, because the deer shed their antlers every year, usually in February.
However, the increasing mass production of shaving brushes has made deer antler increasingly unattractive. The shape is very irregular, making it impossible to process using lathes, for example. Processing is only possible by hand. No computerized machine can (to date) recognize and process the various shapes of the raw material.
If staghorn shaving brushes are still offered today, they usually consist primarily of metal, with a staghorn ring around them. Relatively straight pieces of the horn are completely cored out, leaving only the hard outer ring. This is then wrapped around a metal collar. The disadvantage, however, is that these brushes are usually relatively small, and the staghorn is more or less just an ornamentation of the metal or even plastic core.
We have now resumed the original manufacturing process and are producing shaving brushes and shaving sets in small series according to the old pattern.
The horn material is first impregnated in a process lasting approximately five weeks. This is necessary because the core of the antler is very porous. Approximately every 48 hours, a thin layer of highly viscous varnish (similar to parquet varnish) is applied to the cut surfaces, which then penetrates into the interior of the antler. Only when the piece no longer absorbs the varnish can it be further processed.
Now the piece of antler is impregnated and sealed against moisture.
Now it's time to use your eye for detail, as every piece of antler should be used as much as possible. The tips become razor handles and the middle sections of shaving stands, while the thicker pieces become either base plates or shaving brush handles.
Each individual piece of a set must harmonize in color and structure. The joints must be individually leveled so that two antler pieces, or even one antler piece and a metal mount, fit together perfectly.
All parts are connected using either brass screws or brass threaded rods. The shaving brush heads are securely anchored—as usual—with special brush cement.
The result is highly individual products that are truly unique. Each piece is truly one of a kind!
Information on dimensions and weights:
Ring diameter: 22mm
Total height: approx. 120mm
Visible hair length: approx. 57mm
Hair quality: Premium Silvertip
Weight: approx. 95 grams
Note: Unfortunately, we do not carry holders for this shaving brush. However, it fits standard 26mm holders from almost all other manufacturers.
