Pin-on comb or decorative comb made of buffalo horn

Handcrafted insert comb made from natural horn material.

Working the natural material horn with such intricate detail is a difficult art. The pin-on combs made from Asian water buffalo horn are only approximately 1.8 millimeters thick! At this thin thickness, the horn must be elastic to remain durable and not break easily. Therefore, the grain of the natural horn must be meticulously observed for each individual piece.
This type of hair accessory used to be made of tortoiseshell. Horn is a good alternative, although it is considerably more difficult to work with than tortoiseshell. The combs are usually black; some, like the one pictured, are a bit lighter, almost tortoiseshell. Sometimes, although very rarely, there are also small light gray or white inclusions. These are very light (only about 4.5 grams), and the horn material, unlike plastic or metal, is very similar to hair—so the hair is not damaged.
