Producing synthetic "badger hair" isn't all that easy. Real badger hair is very soft, can retain water between the badger hairs without allowing it to penetrate the hair itself, and thus remains just as elastic even when wet.
The latest generation of synthetic "badger" now offers a softness at the tips that rivals that of the finest silvertip. Visually, the synthetic version is almost indistinguishable from real badger, even for connoisseurs. While the synthetic hair doesn't retain as much elasticity when wet as real badger hair, it lathers up shaving soap excellently and can thus surpass, if not the real badger silvertip brush, then at least the hog bristle and even black badger hair in terms of use and appearance.
The production of the synthetic badger head is quite complex – because the handcrafting of the head is very similar to the production of real badger heads. A key advantage is the theoretically unlimited availability of the material and the fact that it makes a caring and close wet shave with a brush and shaving soap available even to vegans and those who do not want or are not allowed to use animal products for religious or ethical reasons.
